We’re so happy to have friends and family joining us from near and far to celebrate our wedding. Below is some travel and accommodation information to help you plan your trip.

Getting to Plovdiv

If you’re travelling from abroad, most international routes will bring you into either Sofia or Istanbul, with Plovdiv easily reached from both cities.

FROM SOFIA
Sofia is the main international gateway into Bulgaria. From Sofia, Plovdiv can be reached by:

Car rental or private transfer (approximately 1.5–2 hours)
Bus or train (approximately 2.5–3 hours)

FROM ISTANBUL
Plovdiv can also be reached from Istanbul by car, private transfer, or bus. Travel times vary depending on route and border crossing.

Accommodation

Plovdiv has a wide range of accommodation options to suit different preferences and budgets. The hotels below are simply a few centrally located options you may find helpful, and there are also many great Airbnb and short-stay options throughout the city.

There is plenty of parking available at the venue. If you are driving to the venue, you will be able to safely leave your car overnight and collect it the next day.

Local Tips

CURRENCY AND PAYMENTS

As of January 2026, Bulgaria has adopted the Euro (€, EUR). For international guests, a Wise or Revolut card is a convenient option with the best exchange rates and low fees, and works like a debit card in shops, restaurants, and ATMs.

LANGUAGE

While most people speak some English, it's helpful to have a translation app like Google Translate on hand. This can assist with reading signs, menus, and communicating in everyday situations.

WEATHER

Expect daytime temperatures of 17–26°C and evenings around 13–18°C. September is generally dry with about 8 hours of sunshine per day, so light layers are recommended for cooler evenings.

TRANSPORT

Taxis are reliable and rental cars are available for more flexibility. Please click on the image below to download the app and note that most taxis in Bulgaria do not accept card, so it is useful to carry cash.

Ancient Roman Theatre – One of Plovdiv's most iconic landmarks, still used for performances today.
Old Town – Wander the cobbled streets, admire the colourful Revival-era houses, and soak up the city's history.
Kapana Creative District – A lively neighbourhood filled with boutique shops, cafés, restaurants and street art.
Roman Stadium – Hidden beneath the city centre, this remarkably preserved Roman stadium dates back to the 2nd century.
Nebet Tepe – One of the oldest parts of Plovdiv, offering beautiful panoramic views over the city.

Sozopol – A charming seaside town with a relaxed atmosphere, delicious seafood and picturesque beaches. It’s a place that’s very special to us personally, as it’s where we got engaged.

LOCAL FOOD AND DRINKS TO TRY

No trip to Bulgaria would be complete without trying a few local favourites:

Banitsa – A traditional flaky pastry filled with Bulgarian cheese.
Shopska Salad – Bulgaria's famous salad made with tomatoes, cucumbers, roasted peppers, onions, sirene cheese and parsley.
Meshana Skara – A mixed grill featuring a selection of Bulgarian barbecue favourites.
Tarator – A refreshing cold soup made with yoghurt, cucumber, dill and garlic.
Lutenitsa – A delicious roasted pepper and tomato spread, traditionally enjoyed with fresh bread.
Ayran – A refreshing yoghurt drink, especially popular during the warmer months.
Rakia – Bulgaria's traditional fruit brandy and an important part of Bulgarian hospitality (drink responsibly!)
Bulgarian Wine – If you enjoy wine, be sure to try one made from the local Mavrud grape, a variety native to the Plovdiv region.
Menta & Sprite – A surprisingly refreshing drink made by mixing green mint liqueur (menta) with Sprite.
